29 ROYAL PORTHCAWL - WALES - Back (Sponsored by BARCELO - COSTA BALLENA) In the early part of 1891 a group of Cardiff business men, involved in shipping and coal exporting, and all keen golfing enthusiasts decided to form a golf club at Porthcawl. The following April the members were granted the right to cut holes for a nine hole golf course on Lock's Common. The rest of that year was spent clearing the common of a dense, tangled covering of gorse and bracken, and in February 1892 Charles Gibson, the Westward Ho.! professional, was invited to Porthcawl where he stayed and laid out the nine hole course. In 1895 it was decided to move to the present location and extend the course adding nine more holes on land forming part of the Manor of Skier. About three years later the original nine holes on the Common were abandoned and the present eighteen established. King Edward VII bestowed the honour of Royal status on the club in 1909 and in 1932, The Prince of Wales (afterward the Duke of Windsor) visited the club with some of his friends who were members. One of the many interesting objects d'art in the Club House is the full length picture of the Prince. Royal Porthcawl was described as being one of the twelve finest courses in the world by the late Tom Scott, a leading writer on golf and former editor of Golf Illustrated. Since his day the club has acquired a large practice area and further improvements have been made to the course, developments which keep Royal Porthcawl firmly among the world's top golf courses. The status of the course is sustained by the many prestigious professional and amateur events held at the club over the years.

31 GOLF HOUSE CLUB - SCOTLAND Back (Sponsored by ISLANTILLA GOLF RESORT ) One of the many joys of golf, is the variety and vagaries of different clubs and courses. If there are a league of idiosyncratic clubs then the Golf House Club would be in with the best of them. The name for a start, gives you a taste for what is to come. A number of  clubs have salvaged masts from former sailing ships, from which they hang their flag, but here they have gone for something nautically different - 30ft of periscope from HMS Excalibur. Its presence by the first tee is to ensure the way is clear down the first, as there is a blind tee shot over a hill some 50 yards from the tee. The thought of a blind tee shot off the first tee would to many be unthinkable, not here; in fact this is the first of many blind shots round a course that has no par 5s and only 2 par 3s. It might be relatively short at 6273 yards but make no mistake, this is a true test of golf and a very enjoyable one at that. Winners: Andrew Lang-Stevenson - Gordon Murray - George Pepper - Peter Keeling  Runners Up: Alistair McLain - Craig Malcolm - George Smith - Johnny Collie.

32 LINDRICK GOLF CLUB Back (Sponsored by NOVO SANCTI PETRI Golf course and IBEROSTAR HOTEL - Andalucia) Lindrick Golf Club, founded in 1891, lies 3 miles west of Worksop. It is considered to be one of Britain's finest inland courses. Lindrick is an excellent test for golfers of all standards - the greens are firm and fast, the course is open throughout the year and in winter playing conditions are particularly good. Temporary greens are rare and the fine fairways make preferred lies unnecessary other than in the wettest years. The golf course is unusual in that it finishes with par 3, rated by some as one of the best finishing holes in golf.  Sited in Magnesia limestone heath land providing excellent drainage, the course will normally be closed only because of snow or frost. It occupies an area of approximately 205 acres and is a site of Special Scientific Interest which is managed in accordance with English Nature's Wildlife Enhancement Scheme. In 1998 Lindrick were winners of the National Award. In the spring when the gorse is in bloom, a plethora of wild flowers (some of which are very rare) can be seen around the course. The colour continues throughout the Summer and Autumn. RESCHEDULE for SEP 21 2007 due to bad whether.
